Why we are asking you rather than reading your website
We read every school and council page we can. What comes back is often not readable by anything —
including, and this is the part that matters, a parent using a screen reader.
Four councils publish the year as a grid of coloured squares with no date written anywhere in the file: the
term boundaries are the shading. One county's PDF says in its own properties that it is
“unsuitable for assistive technology users — intended for print and download”, and it is the only
place those dates exist. Kent's table is perfectly clear to look at and comes out as
0 1 /09/2 6. Plenty of schools upload a Word file or a spreadsheet, so answering
“when does term end” means downloading something. Some term-dates pages render completely empty.
None of that is any one person's fault — a colour-coded calendar is a perfectly good thing to pin on a
noticeboard, and a school office has better things to think about than machine-readable data. But a date
published only as a picture is a date some families cannot read at all, which is what the accessibility
regulations for public sector websites are about.
Sending them here fixes it once. They become plain text on your school's page, a calendar
feed parents can subscribe to, and a machine-readable source — and you keep the picture on the noticeboard
if you want it.
What we never do
Publish your name, your role or your email address, on any page or in the API. Pass anything to anyone
else. Send you anything except one reminder a year, before the next academic year, asking for the new
dates. There is nothing to pay, now or later.
