About Schooldates

Schooldates lists every educational establishment in the United Kingdom — state schools, private schools, nurseries, colleges and universities — and gives each one a page with its term dates, the facts published about it, and where it is.

There are currently 27,127 establishments on the site, 2,150 academy trusts and 183 local authorities.

Why term dates are awkward

Since 2013 academies, free schools, voluntary aided and foundation schools have set their own term dates. Only community and voluntary controlled schools have to follow their council. That is about a quarter of schools. For the rest, a council calendar may match, or may be a fortnight out.

So every date on this site says where we read it and the day we last checked, and whether the council's calendar applies to that school. Where we have not found a date, the page says so.

Where the data comes from

Establishments, trusts and local authorities come from Get Information about Schools, published daily by the Department for Education, as at 2026-08-31. Coordinates are converted from the eastings and northings in that file. Term dates have no national dataset in any of the four nations, so they are collected source by source.

What is not here

No snow days or other short-notice closures. No childminders — Ofsted redacts their names and addresses in the national file. No head teacher names or any other named individuals, on any page or in the API.

Cost

The website and the calendar feeds are free. A paid JSON API is planned once coverage is worth charging for.
